GUARDING THE EMPIRE.
LORD ROBERTS REPLIES.
By Cable—Pras3 Association—Copyright,
London, December 4.
Lord Roberts, in a letter to the Times, said that Lord Haldane talked loosely of our command of the -sea as a profounl strategical principle. The National Service League did not deny the necessity of a supreme navy, but an efficient army for home defence was indispensable in order to give the navy mobility. The expenditure of an additional four millions would provide an adequate army and give freedom of action to the navy and the overseas expeditionary force.
THE INDIAN PROPOSALS. Received 5. 11.30 p.m. London, December 5.
The Gaekwar of Baroda has telegraphed to the Chronicle that he does not know anything of the Indian navy contribution. The idi» was excellent, but bristled with difficulties.
