GISBORNE TO NAPIER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisbomc, Wednesday. The Gisborne-Napicr ferry service was inaugurated to-day, the Takapuna arriving early with about 150 passengers from Napier, including members of an amateur opera company. The service is a tentative one, and is hoped to be permanently established. The Mayor presided at a function in honor of the occasion.
MUSICAL EXAMINATIONS. Wellington, Wednesday. Mr. Schilsky, examiner for the Trinity College of Music, has awarded the Governor's medal to Elsie May Maiison, aged 15, Invercargill centre. lie suggests that in future the medal should be awarded to higher candidates, either in associate or licentiate. Mr. Schilsky considers that Kathleen Levy, who t'oo'k her A.T.C.L. degree at the age of 15, is the most promising pianist he lias heard in Australasia.
GOLD AND SILVER EXPORTS. Wellington, Wednesday. During the past eleven months New Zealand exported 326,980 ounces of gold valued at £1,280,051, which was 08,185 ounces, of the value of £405,809, less than in the corresponding period of last year. There was also a big decrease in silver, viz., 42G.425 ounces, valued at £38,714.
CARGO PILFERING. Wellington, Wednesday. Four men, Henry Madden, Geoffrey Wilson, Henry Thompson, and Anthony Bannister, were charged to-dav with cargo pilfering on the steamer Otaki, between Auckland and Wellington. Goods of the value of £0 were taken. Madden and Wilson were quartermasters on the boat. Madden was sentenced to four months' imprisonment, Wilson to two months, and the others to one month each.
