TURF TOPICS. (By Moturoa.) The flags will bo flying at Woodvillp •to-day and to-morrow, and, considering the very large acceptances received for the first day's events, the gathering should he a record one for the country club. Seventeen horses have been paid up for in the Woodville Handicap, of ■which number Mira and Obligant will be rehandienpped for Feilding victories. The 'heavy; going at Feilding may have dis : counted many horses' chances, but there is no denying that the abovei-men-tioned pair arc in good form. Seatondale and Sir Tristram have beeii'respo'nsible for decent gallops lately, and may run prominently. ' '< ' : The Electric Handicap always produces a keen contest, and with Crown Pearl, Rod Lupin and Naumai in to-day's field the pace should be on all, the way. Ceylon ran well in the Manchester Handicap at Feilding on, Monday, ; and should take a prominent hand in the settlement of a good race at Woodvillp.

The Hawkp's Bay sportsman, Mr. A.'F; Douglas, appears to have a promising three-year-old filly in the shape of Gazalie (Gazeley—Ladybird). She filled the role of runner-up to The Dodger on Saturday, and made up a lot of ground in the straight. If given a run in the Maiden." at Woodvilie, Gazalie- should have a big following. The Koran disqualification is the sensation of the week. The. risks-that some jockeys will take to win a race are. simply marvellous. In this case Koran i ; looked a certain winner,'but to'settle Cornelian effectively Coker glaringly "came across' at the chestnut, bored him on to the rails,.and caused the hitter's rider to almost pull up. It is little wonder that the public, expressed violent indignation, and the stewards of the Feilding Club are to be congratulated on j their prompt dealing with a matter j which, is opposed to the tenets of pure j sport. • '■'■ ■ ■'■] The going at Feilding on Saturday was' awful, and across the straight : in 6nc; place • a regular stream of water "was' flowing. The enclosures were ankle-deep in slush, and those who, for sport's sake alone, braved the quagmire, deserved to get in for "nix" and have a free luncheon .ticket thrown in. The totalisator arrangements were not in keeping with the general go-ahead policy of the Fejlding Club, and a good deal of money was shut out on every race. All Taranaki, even the village John, knew all about The Dodger for the.open event on the first day. Trainer 0. Jackson had the bay at his best, and it was simply a shame what he did with the opposition. The good field of seventeen enabled the llawera horse to pay his followers a handsome dividend. Crown Pearl made a game bid for victory in the Flying, but the mud took a lot out of him at the finish, and he had to strike his colors to the lightlyweighted Eangiatua. On the second day both Labor Day and Lady Volga showed remarkably improved form, and the consistent New Plymouth horse again suffered defeat by a narrow margin. One of the closest finishes ever seen on the Feilding course was that of the St. Andrew's Handicap. Mira and Sir Solo crossed the line together, and only the man in the box could tell which was the winner. Ngatimaru was a head away third, and almost level came Odessa, Routine and Bonnie Boy. It was a great finish, and, as usual, there were many disputing the judge's placing. It would be a great world if we were all judges!

As stated in these columns last week, Trainer IT. Rickey's charge, Chief Marshal, is a really good sort of a hurdler. ITe appeared to win each day at Feilding with ridiculous ease, and the handsome dividend attached to his victory on Saturday was a pleasant surprise. It was almost like getting money from Home! The Feilding Stakes proved the Lest of good things for the Welcome Stakes winner, Peronilla. She was first away, and quickly estahlished a break on her opponents. Towards the finish she was coming hack to thom, but she was still well clear of Export and Nightwatch when the post was passed.

Ridwill's turn came in the Kiwitca Welter, Imagination winning all the way and paying a false price. Semaphore won a double in fine style at the meeting, and is a great advertisement lor Signalman. On the first day a lot of money was lost' when Semaphore

and Lady Louise beat Tetikura home, but the latter was seen to advantage on Monday. Allure was, for some unaccountable reason, whispered as a "moral" for the second day, and was very unlucky to go under to Tetikura. Allure did not get the best of handling, and was too far away in the earlier stages for his backers' fancy. At the finish Allure was galloping over everything. Weights for the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting are due about Friday.
