Since then a telegram had been received from Thomas that he would proceed with the work under protest. A letter was received from Messrs. i Weston. ■& Weston, without prejudice, asking the Council to pay Mr. Thomas Is per yard on the unfinished'balance of the contract, and also, pay the Cape road balance.

Cr. Maxwell moted that the action of the chairman be affirmed, irrespective of consequences, as he 1 had (lone what he considered best. ' This was seconded bv Cr. Wilcox and, after some discussion, carried. Crs. Willcox and Maxwell moved that as the contractor failed to' carry out the work, £4 be returned to Mr. Thomas and that the balance, £7, be impounded ( £3 having been paid to the Parihaka Road BoaTd for damage to the road). An amendment that the whole amount be paid', moved by Crs. Campbell and Harvey, was carried. It was further resolved that it be an instruction that when contractors have to cart over roads other than county roads, the foreman of the bodies interested inspect the road before the commencement of the contract. The clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps for the Council to neeome a registered authority for the license of motors.

It was resolved to inform Mr. Greenway (Puniho Dairy Factory) that the Council had not. sufficient funds to keep the 12ft. width in good order, and therefore was unable, to comply with the request to metal the roadway the full chain in front of the factory (to which the company offered to contribute. — Abridged from Times.
