A MATERNITY HOME.
SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. Representations were made to the Prime Minister by a deputation with respect to the nursing and general treatment of women at St. Helen's Maternity Home. It wis stated that though the Home was intended for the wives of poor men, such were often refused admittance, though others whose husbands were earning good salaries were admitted. Allegations were also made in regard to the conduct of the Home from a nursing point of view, and the desirability of a magisterial enquiry was urged. The Prime Minister said that somewhat serious allegations had been made regarding the method of treatment of women admitted to the Home. Arrangements had already been made for a magisterial enquiry. The present building was altogether unsuitable, and a new building would have to be provided as soon as possible.
