The idea in-playing colts' '.matches, which do i)Qt cofini in the 'bariiner match, is tojjjeoyide ?n afternoon's jsport for beginners who ...Sack sufficient •-experience to /participate'-•'■•■to 1 matches. The idea is an excellent one, and it is to 'be hoped that other clubs will take it up. This afternoon the New Plymouth and Fitzroy clubs will meet in a friendly two-rink game on "the former club's green. A return match is to be played. Next Thursday's banner matches are as follows:—New Plymouth v. Fitzroy, at New Plymouth; Stratford v. Tnglewood, at lugle'woofl j' Waitara v. West End, at West End.

The first round of tha pairs handicap of the New Plymouth Ciub is to ho completed to-day,, wid that of the singles and cnp by December 11. ' A meeting of the North Taranaki Association, which was convened for Thursday night, lapsed for want of a quorum, and will be held next' Thursday. The business for consideration is the proposal to pay return visits to Wanganui and Ilawera. It is likely- that a- notice of motion will be tabled at the meeting with a view to materially reducing the number of members necessary to constitute a quorum. As the rule at present stands, eight members are required for a quorum, and as the country clubs are seldom represented this has 'been found to be unworkable. "In view of the fact that the holidays are rapidly approaching it is to be hoped that delegates will make a special effort to attend Thursday's meeting. Jlawera and Manaia bowling clubs met for the first time this season on Wednesday, the game 'being played at Manaia. The former .scored a point in the banner competition.

At the Bowling' Carnival to be held at Melbourne between-.Christmas and New Year all the events will be Australasian championships.; At a meeting- held in Toronto of the Eastern and "Westorn Ontario Bowling Associations, it was decided to accept the invitation of the International Bowling Board for a team of bowlers to visit Great Britain next season. A committee was appointed to arrange the details.

An Australian-suggestion witli something in it:—'Several;clubs are now endeavoring to make 'the greens more attractive by roses, shrubs, etc. 'The niatte-r of' offering some inducement, to t.iiQ- various greenkeepers to improve . the , surroundings ought to be taken up by-tho association without delay. Oiit of the capitation fee a first and second prize-could easily be found for the two 'bfesfc greens and gardens. Ten pounds or fifteen pounds given each year as-a^psie'e"would have a most stimulating offect iii 'beautifying the various greens and improving the playing surfaces." ■ " ;

surfaces." The ; Australians" could well take a leaf out of the botolo of, say, tlie Now Plymoutli 'Club, the spare ground on whose green is given-oVef to the growing of flowers and shrubs,'"' The. members of the New South Wales team of bowlers who returned by the Oslei'lcy tell r.n interesting story as to how they constituted ; theiiiselves immigration agents (statesthi' Sydney Sun). "At every function i'ttfe ''.irttfcnded," one of the number aiiid 1 ,■ 'they wore legion; at every st'Ayed at, and wherever we travelled' .'we were never done talking about ; Australia. Wc met a gentleman well-khtttori' in Australia (Mr. Arthur Packard), and he and Major Wainc, of our party, are bringing out to gvdnev fifty-five girls to act as waitresses'at a city cafe. We got the girls from the hotels we stayed at, and a lino stamp of young women they are. Some ! of the girls had never heard of Sydney. However, we were ablet to impress upon them Australian life,, atjd they readily decided to come and try .their luck in a new land. As. we travelled from place to place it was astonishing' to find how little most English people knew of Australia. They had no idqa we had tall buildings and well 1 aid-put parks, and they -were staggered to Iqarn that there were three-quarters of a million of white • people in Sydney alone. But, you know, we had two good spokesmen in Major Waine and Mr. Scott, aud at every function they were able to paint a very fine

picture in words. Once they got started tliey became so interested that everybody round them said 'do on.'" Here is t)ic picturesque manner in which a Melbourne scribe describes the downfall of the two redoubtable clubs, M.C.C. and Armadale, in the Pennant competition:—'"The outstanding feature of the opening pennant matches was the the defeat of Armadale on the home green by Richmond Union. Of course tlie daily papers always give a special heading to such'a calamity; but this is the result of being famous. Armadale, of course, have not their full complement of players yet. But the fact has to be faced that Richmond 'did them brown.' Hansen's rink did the damage, and one player at least in that rink will laugh loud and often at getting one into the

I j great Armadale. When Greek meets I Greek, etc., etc. Well, Charlie, there's |! lots and lots of other things they can't j beat you at.- Armadale won in the ! two rinks skipped by Parker and McI I Donald; but Collins beat Smith by a 1 point. A very fine performance on the [ part of Richmond all round. Armadale, / however, will improve on this game a good deal. Next doov to this heap of debris was the smashing up of M.C.C., East Melbourne, who will persist in ■ hanging on to the 'Fitzoy' (though perhaps entitled to do so), just landed the game by the narrowest of margins, viz., one point. A better game would be difficult to describe, two or three points only separating any of the rinks. .Mason's (i ) up over 'Jimmy' Jones just about accounted for the win. M.C.C. are evidently short of a gallop, or short of something else. Like Armadale, they have a paling or two out of the fence. But that is no reason why the cows should get in. I have much pleasure, however, in congratulating East Melbourne upon such an auspicious begini ning."
