AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
AT ELTHAM. Of all the holiday attractions in Taranaki, none has become more firmly established as an essentially provincial institution than the Eltham Axemens Carnival on December 26 and 27. This gathering is famed throughout Australasia as the largest and most influential Axemen's Sports gathering south of the line, and annually attracts as competitors all the leading bushmen of Australia and the Dominion. The Association oilers prizes of such value as to place it in its pre-eminent position, and the public has for years recognised the enterprise of the Association, and the merit of the competitors, by attending the function in such numbers as to completely put in the shade the "gates" of any other organisation in the province. That this year's attendance will be again up to the axemen's standard there is no reason to doubt, when it becomes known that the entries again number hundreds, and all the leading exponents of the axe and saw are again competing, in addition to the cash prizes of £375, and the other trophies, the Collie King Axe and Tool Company/has presented a 20-guinea cup, and the Plumb Axe Company an exceptionally valuable gold medal. Nominations for the cycling events close on Saturday, December 7. Showing that the Association retains' its hold on the publie, the secretary advises that no fewer than (50 new members have recently joined the Association.
