BUTTER AND CHEESE.
THE BUTTER-FAT AND CASEIN TEST.
RESULTS AT THE STRATFORD SHOW.
Considerable controversy has taken place among dairymen lately as to the value of certain cows for butter ana cheese purposes, it being argued that the best cow for supplying a butter factory is not the best for supplying n cheese factory, and vice versa, A week'g test cannot be token as altogether a thorough test, which should extend over the whole season, but the tests that have taken place at the agricultural shows lately should help in some degree to settle this vexed question. At Hawera last week the first, second and third cows in the butter-fat competition occupied precisely same relative positions in the combined butter-fat and casein competitions, and at Stratford the winner and runner-up in both competitions were the same, the third cow in the butterfat test being placed a very close fourth in the combined test, and they were all different cows to those shown at the Egmont A. and P.- Show. Conditions were similar in each case, viz., the cows to be in the possession of the Society for nine days, the last four days' milking, to be taken into consideration. Of thirty-seven 'entries, eleven materialised, j The result; was an eiisy win for Mr. R. D. ITarkness : (Xgaere), with his Jersey 1 cow, which has a great record, having \ won the same competition last year and being second the previous year. This cow beat the Hawera winner, "Perfection," by O.fl points in the fat competition, and by .421b in the combines fat and casein. : By winning the competition twice in' succession Mr. R. D. Harkness wins Messrs C. and E. Jackson'* silver cup outright, i This cow headed both the butter-fat, with o.G, and the casein with 3.4. She was bred by Mrs. Jennins, of. Waitara, and though not on the Stud Book is almost a pedigree, being by Abundance, an imported bull. The second was a Jersey-Ayrshire cross, And .-the third ;n the butter-fat a pedigree Jersey, A pedigree TTolstein appeared fifth or. the list, but it must bo remembered •that; that animal was about 200 miles away from homo, and the journey and change of environment must necesi sarily .affect her output. The detailed results are:—
