Stratford News

From Our Resident -Reporter. STRAY PARAGRAPHS 'Anniversary services were held at the Stanley Road Church on Sunday. The services were taken by the Rev. Birley, of llawera, in the afternoon, and by tlie Rev. B. Metson, of Stratford, in the evening.

.Stratford is getting quite a reputation for cheapness. A Stratford lady traversing Broadway yesterday with a brown paper parcel informed me that it contained drapery purchased by her in Stratford for a friend in Wellington. She added thai drapery could be purchased here a groat deal more cheaply than in tliu Empire City. As for groceries, one has only to compare published prices of principal lines to see that we are not overcharged for the food we eat, as compared with other towns.

The dust of Saturday was followed yesterday by a warm soaking rain. No one believes for a moment that the rain can last till Wednesday, and two line days are predicted for Taranaki's popular spring show. The special train arrangements should prove very convenient for visitors from both north and south.

The Rev. A. Reader returned yesterday from Palmerston North, where he attended Synod. He broke the homeward journey at llawera, and preached there on Sunday, efl'ecting an exchange of •pulpits with ihe Rev. Birlev, of llawera. The funeral of the late' Mr. William Abbott on Sunday was very largely attended.

BUSINESS NOTICES. Menfolk who are particular about their appearance are bound to be interested in the advertisement in this issue from Messrs. Mullen and Marshall, of "The Kash." The notice deals with their special line of boxed suits, ready to wear, and all lines of clothing and mercery, such as genuine hand-made panama hats, caps, shirts, ties, collars, straw boaters, and all the other etceteras which go to make up a well-selected stock. j _ Mr. G. W. Mills advertises in this issue to draw attention to his fresh stock of toys, stationery, leather, metal, glass and china goods suitable for presents. Mr. Mills makes the point that these goods, whilst the very thing desired by particular people, are low priced throughout. Special value is given hi packets of Xmas cards and postcards. "Kiddieland!" This word implies, to tlie initiated the home of glad children. Where else should they be so gkd as in a well filled, well equipped toyshop like C. E. James', Stratford? It is Joyland for everybody, too. Old and young, requiring presents for young and old, can have their wants promptly and completely filled. The stock includes the newest in leather purses, handbags, etc.. vases, companions, Xmas cards and stationery, and other good things "too numerous to particularise."

In this issue Messrs. J. Masters & Son publish particulars of a special Xmas offer of prints and such-like goods for the festive season at prices which they say are unique and unparalleled'.

BERNARD'S PICTURES. The customary blight and varied selection of new 'films was submitted to patrons of His Majesty's Picture Palace last night, and received a unanimous verdict of approval. The programme was a splendid one, well up to the average "Bernard" standard. In the dramatic class "Broncho Billy and the Bandits" aroused most' enthusiasm, whilst "A Child's Prayer" and "Me an' Bill" depicted intensely humane stories that touched a chord of sympathy deep down in every heart. These two films were delightful in their pathos, and were just full of poetic action. Very interesting items were 'Elephants at Work in In" dia" and "A Trip on Lake Constance," whilst tln> "Ganmont Graphic" imparted all the latest topical happenings the world over. The comedies were above the usual average, inasmuch as they were "sensiMc" comics, which kept the audience well entertained.
