WHISKY on WATER?
To tin: Editor. Sir,—Ever since Adam and Eve were turned, out of the Ganl< :i of Eden as being undesirable immigrant under the Noxious Weeds Act the law has been more or less of an ass. Its vagaries are as uncertain as those of a schoolgirl and almost as ineffective. Now, what's a poor fellow to do? I am moved to seek your advice, Sir, in tlr.' light of Thursday's Court proceedings. On that day I notice that three defendant*, were heavily fined for putting too much whisky into Awakintf, whilst two others were fined similar amounts for putting too much water in the butter. Now, how am I to decide which is the worse poison—the whisky or the water? And if I put too much whisky in the water shall I be fined double the amount? Also if I put butter into Awakino aud whisky into the butter, am I infringing .the law? Further, if I put Awakino into the butter and whisky into the moisture or water into the moisture and mixture into the whisky, do I get seven years? It really seems safer to live on beer and cheese, or else to follow the example of Nebuchadnezzar and eat jjrass, if you happen to live at Awakino. Jesting ■ipart, in the light of the evidence, the inflicted seem unconscionably severe, and move one to* wonder which of these detestable poisons it is better to have for breakfast.—l am, etc., PUZZLED.
