LAWN TENNIS.
THE INTERSTATE CIIAMI'JONSIJ I P. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 21, 10.1(1 pan. Sydney, November 21. There was delightful weather, and the courts were firmer for the interstate lawn tennis tournament. There was a large attendance. CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. Lowe beat Wright, 0-3, 0-0, li-4, G--3. Beamish beat Patterson in three straight sets, (i-4. C—2. 6—4. Marsh beat Dunlop, o—2, o—l, 7—5. Marsh was too speedy and accurate, but Dunlop was paving himself. J Ollivier beat St?. John, o—i, o—3, 7—5. The game was played with an abs'-ncc |of winning shots, aild was won chiefly on mistakes. St. John was tired after ! yesterday's doubles. | The day's sensation was provided by | Rice beating Dixon, 2 —o, o—l, o—4,0 —4, o—4. Rice played the game of his life, [putting every ounce of weight into his drives, which were a beautiful length, I and he kept Dixon effectively away from the net. The Englishman back-handed with great ease. Rice's magnificent game was cheered. Park beat A. B. Jones. This was the Irishman's first game. He impressed 1 the spectators by the ease with which he treated Jones. His driving off the ground was too severe for the Australian, and his length was almost perfect. His back-hand shots across the court into the corner or up the side lines were brilliant, and he made scarcely a mistake. It was the finest exhibition of base line tennis seen on a championship court here. Jones never had a chance, although he played some brilliant shots, which were necessary to gain a point The score was o—l, o—3, o—4.0 —4. Brookes easilv beat Brown (New Zea- . land), G-0, 0-0, <5-0. DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP. Beamish and Park beat Barnard and Patterson, o—3, o—3, G—2. The Britishers are a fine pair. Bearnish's ser- . vice was a great asset, and the pair outclassed their opponents. i Jones and Wright beat Lowe and Dixon, G—2, 6—4, fi—o. It was an unattractive game. Dixon was apparently •> worried by a number of false bounds i spoiling his half-volleying.
