THE INTER-STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. ,By Cable—Pr.'ss Association—Copyright. Melbourne, November 19. The Inter-State Tennis Championships opened in dull weather. The courts were soft. Interest centred chiefly in the match between Dunlop and Brookes and Wright and A. B. Jones. The latter pair played brilliantly frequently, but their opponents ' were magnificent throughout, winning by 6—3, 6 —l). Brookes' serving, volleying and overhead work won many sets. His drawing off the ground showed more pace than us- • ual. The same pair beat Kidston and Anderson. 6—4, (t—o. Lyeett and Heath were below form, but won all their matches, beating Anderson and Kidston. » o—3, 3—o, o—7, and Marsh and Metcalfe' fl—4, 7—5. O'Hara, Wood and Campbell beat A. B. Jones and Wright 7 —■"), 4—G. B—o. Woods showed remarkably fine work off the ground and his volleying was splendid.

A Press Association message from Sydney states that the Victorian tennin championships have been postponed on account of rain. Tn place of the proposed match by a mixed team composed of Auckland and Taranaki players against the Englishmen at Auckland, it has now been decided by the New Zealand Association to hold a test match at Auckland on December 211 and 24, the team representing New Zealand to be selected .by the New Zealand Association's selector. WalDickie, and Nicholson have been nominated by (he Taranaki Association for selection in the New Zealand team.
