The death is reported of Mr. Roberl Da vies, soap-maker, of Petone. Sir Joseph Ward visited the Bluff yes terday. He has postponed his depart ure for a week.

A Wellington Pre*.-, Association wire announces that Frederick Eisher Mills (Otago University) has been selected as Rhodes scholar.

The death occurred at her residence, Lower Jlutt on Friday of Mrs. Mary I'rmgle, relict of the late Alexander Pringle. Deceased was in her S2nd year, and was one of the oldest settlers of the Jlutt.

Dr. Wohlmann. the Government balneologist at Rotorua, left Auckland by the Maheno yesterday for Sydney. He will be away on a year's leave of absence in England. Dr. Wohlmann is accompanied by his wife and daughter.

Mr. I*. C. Freetli. contradicts the rumour that he intends taking over the managership of the Taihapc News, and starts to-day for the scene of war at lluntly and Waihi in the interests of the Now Zealand Time*.

The death occurred on Saturday of Mr Alexander William Rock, of FJokitika. head of the local linn of .lolmstim and Co., aged (50 years (states a Press \ssoeiation telegram). Deceased was a prominent citizen, and was formerly a memher of most of the local bodies. ' He leaves a widow and family of one son and hve daughters. Deceased was a resident of Hokitika for forty-six years. News has been received in Napier of the death of Mr. John McKinnon, at Stornoway. The deceased was one of the earliest settlers in Hawke's Bay I'lirn in the island of Lewis (Outer Hebrides) in ]S2S. he took to the sea and for twelve years he pursued that ca ling m the African trade—where he suflercd shipwreck-in the East India Company s service, and. on the Mississippi. In 1854 he came to Melbourne as mate of the ship Kossuth, and then made liis way to this country as mate of tin; brig Roekwood. Later Mr. McKinnon took the fu-ry at dive, and in 1803 settled at Arapawanui. Here he prospered, and was well-known and highly respected all over the district. He was an early member of the Napier Harbor Jioard. and a member of the first Wairoa County Council. In 1898 he celebrated liis gulden wedding. JJe died at the age of SJ. He had four sons and four daughters by his 'irst marriage, and of these Messrs. A., ])., J. M., W., and X. McKinnon are well known in Hawke's Baywhile of his daughters Mrs. Orr, Mrs P Dinwiddie, Mrs. W. T. Bolam (Duncdin)' and Mrs. J. McLean (Stornoway) survive him.

Dean Grogan, whose death was announced at Meauee, Hawke's Bay, at the age of (59, was born near Dungangau, County Tyrone. Ireland, and was educated partly in France, and partly at St. -Mary's, Dundalk, where he was ordained priest in 1879. The' following year, on his arrival in New Zealand, be was appointed curate to the late Very Rev, Father Forest, Napier. In 1884 Dean Grogan was appointed to the charge of the Hawera district, which then included the whole of the coast from Wanganui to New Plymouth. He remained there for four years, and during that time he paid off £7OO of debt, built two churches and a presbytery, enlarged the church at Hawera, and secured land in six- different districts for future church purposes. In ISB4 D<an Grogan succeded Father Forest as parish priest at Napier. After nineteen years' ministration in Napier, he yisited America and Europe. On his return in 1903, he was appointed to the charge of the Wanganui parish, where he erected a school at Aramoho. and a new church (St .Joseph's) in (he same parish. last year he resigned his position at Wanganui owing to failing health, and removed to .Mennee. He has a brother residing in Wlmngnrci. Dean Irosran was a very able preacher and a fine administrator.
