BOWLING.
NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB OPENS ITS ' SEASON. Fine weather favored the opening of the New Plymouth Club's season yesterday afternoon, and the attendance, particularly of tlie ladies was the largest for some vears past. Notwithstanding the recent inclement weather, the greens Were in excellent order, the opening match, president's v. vice-president's teams, proving most enjoyable. Those present included a number of visitors. In a happy little speech, appropriate to the occasion, the president (Mr. A. Goldwater) expressed pleasure at again opening the club's season. He regretted that Miss Goldwater was unable to be present that afternoon, and went on to extend his very hearty thanks to Mesdames Penn and Medley for supervising Ithe afternoon flea arrangements—no light work, he remarked, for such a large crowd. He recalled how last year bowlers were not favored with the be3t of weather for the whole of the season, but 'members had 1 nevertheless had an enjoyable season's sport. Last year -the new banner competition was instituted for the various clubs throughout the district, the honors going to the Hawera Club. He had much pleasure in wishing prosperity and everything that was good to members. It was good to see so many old faces, and he was especially pleased to see their old friend Mr. Bundle handling his bowls as enthusiastically as ever. In thanking Mrs. Paul for consenting to throw the jack, Mr. Gold; water said that lady had had a long as.-, sociation with the club. It was an honor to the club to have her to perform the function. The president concluded by thanking the ladies and the visitors for, their attendance that afternoon. .;
Mrs. Paul then threw the jack, and play was indulged, in for the rest, of the afternoon. / ;
