GENERAL, ASSEMBLY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. At the Presbyterian Assembly to-day the report of the committee on church life and work stated that the census returns of the Dominion showed a gratifying increase in the number of those who claimed a Presbyterian name. In the period 1906-1911, the Anglican Church had increased 12.44 per cent.. Methodist 0.50, Roman Catholic 10.05, Baptist 12.93, and Presbyterian 15.26. Ultimately, the life of both church and State depended on the homo life of the people. Owing to a great variety of causes, there was reason to fear that it was far from being what it once was. Even in Christian households family prayer was not as common as it ought to be. THE THREE-FIFTHS MAJORITY Wellington. Wednesday. A deputation from the New Zealand Alliance waited on the Assembly and urged the abolition of the three-fifths majority handicap. The following motion was passed:—"That this Assembly has heard with pleasure the delegates, and would thank them for their stimulating addresses. The Assembly would gladly give its hearty co-operation for the sake of bringing about a steady abolition of the liquor traffic.
