Mr. Astbury was again operated upon on Tuesday, and is making fair progress. Mrs. T. W. Boddam and Mrs. G. Sauniers were passengers to Wanganui >by yesterday's mail train. At Patea yesterday, Miss Lucy Powdrell, youngest daughter of Mrs. J. Powdrell, was married to Mr. E. C. Whitehead, of Christeliureh.
A Press Association message from London announces the death of Mr. W. S. Penley, the well-known comedian and actor-manger, at the age of sixty. The friends of Mr. W. S. Young, of Otakeho, who underwent an operation in New Plymouth recently, will be glad to hear that lie is making' a satisfactory recovery . Dr .Leslie J .Thompson, M.8., C'h.B.. at present assistant medical officer at the Porirua Mental Hospital, 'has been appointed junior resident medical offler at the Napier Hospital. Captain Higginson, R.H.A, the English aviator, is staying at Wellington, I having just arrived from Sydney and Auckland. He met with a severe accident in England in January last, and is j touring the world for his 'health. The marriage of Miss Cushla Riddiford, youngest daughter of the late Frederick and Mrs. Riddiford, of Wellington, to Dr. Arthur F. Hertz, assistant physician at Guy's Hospital, took place at St. Thomas's, Portman Square, yesterday. The Rev. James Wilson, who temporarily gave up his charge of the Auckland Methodist Mission some months ago. has cabled from Melbourne to the ollieials of the mission that he will not be able to resume his duties in Auckland. The Rev. Nicholas Turner, who is at present in charge, has been asked to succeed Jlr. Wilson, and has accepted the offer. While the Hon. .'las. Allen is absent in England, his portfolios will be distributed temporarily amongst his colleagues. It is probable that Mr. Rhodes will take over the portfolio of Defence, and Mr. Bell that of Education, while the duties of Minister of Finance will be carried on by Mr. Fraser during part of the time that Mr. Allen is absent, and for the remainder of that period by the Prime Minister. .Another of New Zealand's early pioneers has passed away in the person of Mr. John Fowler, who died at eVdiburton at the age of 83. He was born at Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England, on April 2nd, IS3O, and came to Now Zealand in the ship Indus, and landed in Nelson on February 7th, 1543. He spent some years on his father's farm, and then purchased the ketch Harriet, which traded between Nelson and Wellington. Subsequently he engaged in sheep farming in the Nelson and Ashburton districts.
