Mr. W. W. Smith, curator of Pukc-ku-ra Park, has returned from a trip to Canterbury. Mr. W. McLean, of the Bonithon Oil Company, arrived in New Plymouth on Saturday night.

The Hons. T. Kellv and 0. Samuel, M.L.C.'s, and Mr. 11.'Okey, M.P., have returned from Wellington. An Auckland telegram says that news ha* just been received that' -'King" Mahuta has died at iluntly. There are no details.

Mr. J. Thomson, of Xgaiiv. who is a member of the Tarauald Provincial Executive of the Mew Zealand Fanners' Union, intends to visit England early next year, states the Ilawera Star. \ The Opunakc Times states that Mr. L. R. Jackson, who has been Opunakc representative of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile for the Opunakc district is retiring from the service of the Arm. The Rev. J. A. MoXieol, M.A.. formerly headmaster of the Olaki Native College, has accepted the hcadjiuislership of the Te Ante College, in succession to Mr. J. Thornton, who resigned. Mr. MeNieol takes up his duties in March. His Excellency Lord Islington arrived at Christchurch from Wellington on Saturday morning and attended the races at Riccarton. At night ho wan tendered a civic farewell and presented witli an address on behalf of the City Council and the United Labor Party. He will leave for Dunedin to-day. Chaplain, Ist Class, the Right Reverend. Bishop Charles Oliver Mules, M.A., D.D., New Zealand Chaplains' Department, has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces long service medal, having a total service of twenty years and fifty-eight days. The long service decoration has also been awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel Kenueth Mackenzie (reserve of officers 2nd Regiment), he having a total rank and commissioned service of twenty-two Years.

Mr. George Gregory, an old resident of Hawke's Bay, died at Woodvillc last Monday, aged 84. It was over fifty years since Mr. Gregory landed in New Zealand, and he spent niost, if not all, of the years since in Napier, Waipawa and Woodvillc. He had some very vivid remembrances of the times of 'the Maori wars, the precautions taken, and the fight at Omarunui. Some time ago he bad a severe fall, which injured him severely, and he never recovered from the shock and injury.
