EQUITABLE BUILDING SOCIETY.

AXXUAL MEETING. About forty shareholders attended the eleventh annual meeting of the Equitable Society, which was held in the Council Chambers last night. Mr. S. W. Shaw presided, and in presenting the annual report, which lias been published, congratulated the Society 0:1 the state of the funds of both groups. The savings were gradually creeping up. vSo far there has been no losses, and he hoped that there would be none, as the valuator and directors took every precaution over the securities, and so far everything was satisfactory. In No. 1 Group perhaps the appropriations were glower than might have been expected. This might be accounted for in a measure by the fact that no tenders had been received for loans, and tliese had been balj loted for. Consequently there -had not been the same return?. Also several had given notice of discontinuance of subscriptions as provided for under the rules, and, of course, that meant less money. Still, ,the position was very satisfactory. Xo. 1 Group very well. It had been discussed some time ago as to whether the time was not ripe to commence a Xo. 3 Group, but the I directors up to the present had decided 1 to stick to the two groups. Before anI other year it might, however, be adI visable to start another group. He then I formally moved the adoption of the re- | port. This was seconded by Mr. DockI rill, and carried without any discussion ! The three retiring directors, Messrs, [ D. Berry, W. X. Ewing and P. Hopkins, I and the"retiring auditor, Mr. C. T. Mills, were re-elected unopposed. The directors' honorarium was, as before, fixed at £3O in each group. On behalf of the directors, Mr. Shaw returned thanks for the vote, stating that the directors had worked throughout the year in the interests of he society. The chairman apologised for the absence of Mr. F. P. Corkill. At the conclusion of the annual meeting two appropriations of £l5O each, in each of Xo. 1 and Xo. 2 groups were balloted for. The successful shareholders were Miss McNiven (New Plymouth) Xo. 1 Group, and Mr. A. B/Gamlin- (Inglewood) No. 2 Group. ..."".
