Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, the wellknown novelist, poet, and essayist, has been appointed Professor of English Literature at Cambridge University. Mr. T. Charters, of the staff of the Taranaki Daily News, who is about to outer the ranks of the benedicts, was yesterday the recipient of presentation from his confreres. Mr. R. Cock has been appointed as judge in the produce section of the Wanganui Show to be held next week. Mrs. Cock will also officiate as judge in the home industries section. Mrs. E. Kennedy, of Wellington, is at present staying at tho White Hart Hotel. Mrs. Kennedy is the owner of the Urenui Hotel, and her present visit is to put in hand extensive alterations to this well known hostelry. Yesterday the death occurred at the Old People's Home of Mr. Christopher Hurlslonc. The deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of the district, arriving hero with his parents on November 18, 1841, by the Oriental. lie has been an inmate of the Old People's Home for many years. A cable message from Sydney states that Sir Charles Campbell, Bart., arrived there from London by the Otranto, en route for New Zealand. Sir Charles, who is 02 years of age, came to New Zealand in 1574, and engaged in sheepfanning. In IS7S he married a daughter of the Hon. William Robinson, of Cheviot Hills, Canterbruy. He succeeded to the title in 1001. Yesterday Mr. C. E. Robinson, of the local Savings Bank stair, who has been transferred to Gishomc after some ten years' service hero, was the recipient of a presentation in the .-.liapo of some handsome travelling appurtenance* from the members of the staff. Mr. Gee, ActingPostmaster, who is also the Dominion Inspector of Savings Hanks, in making the presentation, mentioned that ho had been much pleased with tho efficiency shown by Mr. Robinson, and had heard with satisfaction of his popularity with the clients of tho office.
