FIRES.
OUTBREAK IN CRITERION HOTEL,
An alarm of fire rang out about halfpast ten last night, and the Central Brigade, under Superintendent F. C. J. Bellringer, were quickly on the scene—the Criterion Hotel. By this time the outbreak, which was confined to the kitchenman's room in the servants' quarters in the rear wing of the hotel, had been subdued by the employees by means of a bucket service, but not 'before the ceiling and part of the wall were burnt through. The kitchenman retired to bed at 9 o'clock, and was aroused from his slumbers by the smell of fire. He states that before finally retiring he blew out his candle, and is in consequence at a loss to account for the outbreak. Credit is due to the employees of the hotel for the prompt manner in which they quenched the flames, which had a stronp hold in the room when discovered.
