Mr. A. Brennan has been appoiated clerk to the Opunake Town Board. The Hon. Joan Dickson-Poynder was a passenger by the Maheno last week for Sydney, en route for England. Sir Charles Campbell, of Cheviot, is a passenger by the Otranto, which arrived at Sydney from London yesterday. Mr. H. W. Sutton, who recently returned to Hawera, with his family, is now seriously ill, and hig condition is causing his friends grave anxiety.—Star. Mr. W. Milne, a member of the Board of Diretors of the Bank of New Zealand, is visiting New Plymouth. He will leave for the South by the mail train this morning. Mr. P. J. Langley, late of the Helensville Hotel, has taken charge of the Urenui Hotel. Before leaving Helensville, Mr. Langley was presented by th« residents with a handsome set of liqueur decanters. There were many expressions of appreciation of the way 'in which Mr. and Mrs. Langley had conducted their hotel at Helensville during their sojourn there.
Major W. E. N. Madocks, K.A., who' was for five years staff-officer to Colonel Pole-Penton when the latter was commandant in New Zealand, is accompanying General Sir Tan Hamilton, InspectorGeneral of the Oversea Forces, who is undertaking the longest tour of inspection ever made by a British officer. Sir lan Hamilton, who goes first to the Far East by way of Siberia, is accompanied by Brigadier-General Ellison, of the general staff, and Major Madocks, who is his military secretary. The delegation is not expected to return to England for almost a year.
