MATCHES IX THE CENTRES. j At Wellington <>: i Saturday East A commenced the .sr.'-'nn with a victory, Saturday's play on the College ground ending in their defeating South by 70 runs. The match called for little comment, except that Grimmett's bowling seemed to trouble South a good deal in the first innings. East's fielding was far j from good. Petone secured a three-point ] win over Victoria College' by the handsome margin of nine wtckets. When play was resumed on Saturday, Barber, wno had a good score on from opening day, was dismissed after adding six. Tregear and Hardham gave a good display, aud added fifty. Bennett and M«Kenzie did not bat, and Petone nad to ) manage with nine men at the wickets. Saunders, although bowling well, was kept on far too long. Surprise of a substantial sor,t was created by Hutt beating the formidable Central eleven. At the close of the play on the first day Central had stood with 99 runs to their credit for their first innings, and Hutt had a total of 70 for six. wickets. Hutt were all out for 109, thus being 10 runs to the good on the first innings. Central's second innings was interesting. Paterson at once began to lay on the wood with confidence, and he and Blamires—who went in first wicket downshowed that they meant business. Soon after this partnership had been broken Central declared their innings closed, with five wickets down for 111 runs, and put Hutt in again. When time was called only four Hutt wickets were down for 83 runs, Central thus losing on the first innings. The North v. East B match is unfinished.
