Rev. John Ross, of Turakina, is seriously ill.
Mr. Walter S. Hill has been appointed plant-breeder to the Agricultural Department.
Mr. Martin Chapman, K.C., of Wellington, has been appointed inspector under the Mental Defectives Act for the or. trict of Wellington. The Hon. James Allen, Minister •! Finance, leaves for London on December 13th. He has booked passage by the Orient liner Orama.
His Majesty the King's consent to the retention of the title "Honourable" by the High Commissioner (the Hon. T. Mackenzie) is gazetted. Mr. P. G. Brennan, of the Public Works Department in New Plymouth, has been transferred to the Proclamation Office at headquarters in Wellington. His promotion dates from November 13.
Mr. J. G, Harkness, manager of the Taratahi Dairy Company (near Masterton), has accepted an appointment in the Agricultural Department, and takes uphis new duties at Hamilton in about a month's time.
The professorial board of the Otago University has nominated Mr. Frederick Fisher Miles for the Rhodes scholarship. Mr. Miles has a splendid scholastic record and has taken' a keen interest in. the general life of the university. A Sydney cablegram says that Mr. Pearce, editor of the Pastoralists Review, has been appointed by the meat companies of New Zealand and the principal comapnies in Australia as delegate to the Chicago Refrigerating Congress in September. According to a Napier telegram Mr. A. S. M. Poison, headmaster of the Napier Boys' High School, has been offered the position of principal of the Ballarat College, Victoria. As the position u one of considerable importance, he lias decided to accept, and will leave for there short- „
Mr. Frank Gordon, of Napier, and late of Waitara, leaves shortly for Australia on a lecturing tour. He informed a Times representative recently that lie proposes to challenge the State poultry experts to meet him in debate for the purpose of demonstrating the efficacy of the Gordon poultry test. He expects to return to New Zealand in Januarv.
The following .resolution was passed at a meeting of Hie Board of Trustees of the New Plymouth Savings Bank yesterday:—"That the trustees place upon record on the minutes their appreciation of the services of the late Mr. Thomas Shailer Weston as solicitor to the bank for many years." It was further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his sons.
Lord.and Ladv Islington will leave Wellington tor Auckland on November 22, and will finally leave New Zealand for England on December 2. On Saturday, November 23, his Excellency wfll formally open the King George's Hall at -Mount Albeit, and on November -'7 lie and Lady Islington will give a large garden party at Government House. It is proposed to have some sort of public demonstration in honour of their Excellencies on Saturday, November 30. nMiw, n-f! liot i* Wl \° has been Chairman of the Clifton County Council during the past twelve mouths, -yesterday took the opportunity of thanking his confreres for their courtesy. Yesterday was the final meeting prior to the election of a chairman for the ensuing year It is understood that Mr. EllioYt doe* not intend to seek re-election to the position of chairman, as he is too busily occupied otherwise. y
Lord and Lady Ranfurly are back at their London residence, 35 Lennox Gardens (writes a Home correspondent). They have recently been at Dungannon where they gave a very pleasant dance m honor of Lord and Lady Northland. The Rev. J. Kennedy Elliott (Wellington) had an interesting chat with Lord Ranfurly last month. He finds that New Zealand's former Governor still takes the keenest interest in all that concerns the welfare of the Dominion and he is hopeful of going out again oh a visit. Plans for a trip there had lately been formed, but at the last moment arrangements had to be cancelled.
A large number of Natives from Wairarapa Waikati, Taranaki, and other districts have passed -through Wellington recently to attend the "tan<n" of "the Chief, Hare Rore Pukekohatu, of the Ngatirarua tribe, who died.-at his residence at Spring Creek on Saturday last. The deceased is the only brother of the popular Chief "Alfred Rore" (Hauareta We Pukekohatu), who is well known fa sporting circles, both as a champion pigeon shot and an owner of racehorses. The father of the deceased, Hare Rore Pukekohatu. and Hapareta Ron Pukekohatu ( Alf Rore"), was the paramount chief of the Ngatirarua tribe, many of whom are resident at Porirua. The deceased, Hare Rore, was a champion athlete in his younger days. Amongst those present at the "tangi" are:—Taniora Mana Love ("Dan Love"), of Ngatiawa Rauiera Erihana, father of 'Tom EllV son" (captain of the first Native football team to visit England), and Matano-a te Hiko of Ngatitoa. All the family of Pukekohatu are very well known in the Marlborough (Wairau) district
