BOWLING.

FITZROY SEASON OPENED. j Favoured with ideal weather the opening of the Fitzroy Bowling Club's season passed off very successfully. The attendance ran into nearly three figures, and those present included visitors from the Stratford, New Plymouth, and West End Clubs. The ladies- were also well represented, and they were responsible for the afternoon tea arrangements. The green was in perfect order, and was very keen. In a happy little speech the president (Mr. Healy) referred to the progress of the Club, and its increased membership, and thanked the ladies for thsir attendance. He also extended a very hearty welcome to members of visiting clubs. He presented the trophies woft during last season. Mr. F. Jackson took the championship cup and medal, while Messrs. Stanley Smith and 11. Ford each received a pair of bowls as winners of the champion pairs. The special prize for the progressive tournament was carried off by Messrs. Stanley Smith and Lealand.

Mr. Curtis returned thanks on ibehalf of the Stratford Club, and incidentally mentioned that the Fitzroy green was as good -as any he had seen that year.

Mr. Medley followed on behalf of the New Plymouth Club. The two clubs had, lie said, had some very close fights in the past, and he hoped to see still closer, contests this year. He also congratulated the club on possessing such a good green.

As a representative of the West End Club, Mr. J. D. Sole congratulated members not only on the state of their green, but also on the state of their club. The hard struggle of former years had at last been rewarded with success.

At the invitation of the .president, Mrs. Stanley Smith formally threw the jack, and the season was declared open. During the afternon a match was played between the President's and Vice-pre-lident's teams. Results:— PRESIDENT v. VICE-PRESIDENT. Oxenham, Price, Healy, Rennell

OPENING OF THE "OVERDALE" GREEN.

Mr. R. Cock opened bis private green at "Overdale" yesterday afternoon, two rinks from the New Plymouth Club participating. The green, Mr. Cock explained, was the outcome of a suggestion by the late Mr. James Paul, who had on his visits to "Overdale" remarked that the grounds lacked only one thing to make them everything that could be desired, and that was a bowling green. Though somewhat late in the day, that drawback had now been removed, and he hoped to see a good deal of his bowling friends, who could always be sure of a hearty welcome there. At the instance of Mr. Ab. Goldwater (President of the New Plymouth Club), Mr. Cock threw the first jack, and a match for trophies presented by Mrs. Cock, was commenced, with the following result:— Morrison, Avery T., Goldwater, Hall (skip) 20 List, Penn, Morey J. C., Smart, H. (skip) Collins, Firth, Ewing, Rundle, S. (skip) 28 Paul S., Hooper, Cock, Smart A. K. (skip)

The winning sides then played three heads, H. Smart's team proving victorious and annexing the trophies, which were duly presented by the hostess herself. The players were hospitably treated, and at the conclusion of the play, Mr. Goldwater, on .behalf of tlie visitors, returned thanks to the host and hostess for their kindness and the most enjoyable afternoon they had provided, concluding by calling for cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Cock, which were heartily given. The green is a two-rink one, is snugly ] and picturesquely situated, and, considering that the turf has only been down' four months-, is in very good playing con-1 dition.
