Mr. .T, A. Button, ex-Chief Postmaster at Wellington, and Mrs. Hutton are on a short visit to New Plymouth. A London cablegram states that the Hon. T. Mackenzie gave a reception to meet the Earl and Countess of Liverpool. There was a large attendance. We are pleased to report that latest reports of Mr. Henry Brown's condition are of a much more favourable nature. Though not yet out of danger he has shown considerable improvement during the last two or three days. Captain McTaggart arrived by the mail tiain last night to make arrangements for the forthcoming visit of the Canadian Cadets to New Plymouth. He was met at the train by the Mayor and Town Clerk. The dates of the visit will be definitely fixed to-day.

An old and respected resident of the Waimate, Plains in the person of Mr. John Ryan, builder and contractor, died at Ma nam on Wednesday, at the age of 55. lie was a fine type of man, one whose word was always his bond, an industrious worker, and his demise at such a comparatively early age will be regretted by a large circle of friends throughout the province. He leaves a widow, eight sons and two daughters. Captain Henry Haydon, ex-Mayor of Palmerston North, and a prominent man in public affairs for many years, is dead, states a cable from London to-d.iv. Deceased arrived in New Zealand in 1879, and settled in Palmerston, and from the start took a keen interest in public affairs. He was a councillor for many years and Mayor for a term. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce, and last year represented the Chamber on the recent Empire Conference in Lonii • went Ho,lle partly on account of his health, and his wife followed him to .bring him back, but he died three days before her arrival in England.

A private cablegram received in Wellington yesterday afternoon (says a press wire) announces the death of Captain ™ ; v Rose, formerly well known in Wellington. Captain Rose was .born in Central America in 1833, went to sea at the age of 14, became third officer at 18, and at 24 years of age obtained a captain's certificate. For fifteen years between 1860 and 1875, he traded between London iand Canterbury, until 1809. He was an officer of the old White Star line, and eventually became captain of the, first boat of the New Zealand Shipping Company— the Rakaia. In 1875 he was appointed marine superintendent of the company's fleet for the Dominion, and a year later he accepted the position of local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company at Wellington. He retired from the company's service sixteen years ago, and since then lived in retirement in London, but occasionally he made trips to New Zealand. 1-Ie was for nearly twenty years a member of the Wellington C!iaml>er of Commerce, and also filled the position of chairman of the Harbor Board for several terms. Captain Rose has left a widow and an unmarried daugther in London. Another daughter (wife of Mr. C. V. Houghton, manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company at Auckland), and three sons, Messrs. J. Q. Rose (with Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co.), W. H. Rose (with Messrs. H. O. Anderson and Co., Wellington), and Lieutenant A. B. Rose, of the British Army
