ENTERTAINMENTS.
EMPIRE PICTURE PALAOE. This popular picture house was again well filled last evening for the second screening of the brilliant mid-week programme. The Panama Canal picture again received a hearty ovation, likewise the Gaumont sensation "Their Lives for Gold." To-night is the last occasion that this selection can be shown in New Plymouth, and intending patrons would be wise to be in attendance early. THEATRE ROYAL PICTURES.
A complete change of pictures will be presented at the Theatre Royal this evening, headed by a great 3000 feet dramatic subject "The Better Way," a striking film play by the popular Nordisk Company. A line educational picture will be shown entitled "Tlie Land of Burns," and under the same heading comes "Ocean Fauna." In the dramatic section there are pictures by Lubin, "A Western Courtship" and Vitagrapli "At the End of the Trial." The comics are an amusing lot, and include a film featuring the well-known "Foolshead."
"A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE."
The Plimmer-Denniston Company concluded their season last night at the Theatre Royal with "A Woman of No Importance." The piece abounded with scintillating dialogue, and Mr. G. S. Tithcragc, as the polished and immoral Lord Illingworth, did not allow his reputation to suffer one whit. He played the part as though it had been specially written for his wonderfully versatile style. Mrs. Brough, as Mrs. Arbuthnot, the woman Lord Illingworth should have married, acted her part as only she could. Miss Beatrice Day, to whom fell most of the witty things said by the women of the peace, was exceptionally good. Miss Lizette Parkes, as the American girl who preaches the higher life to the unregenerate smart set, and Miss Usher, as Lady Thinstanton, also helped materially in a highly creditable performance." Mr. Harry Plimmer, took the small part of Kelvil, the busy M.P., and. Mr. Harry Sweeney, as Gerald Arbuthnot, was as convincing as was it possibe to be in one of the least impressible parts of the play. The Plimmer-Denniston Company, by their two exceptionally creditable performances, have added - to the wood reputation already earned by them in New Plymouth.
