Trefle said the Government feared nothing from the untrammelled press. The framing of the Bill would remove the last remaining embargo of .the penal days. Mr. T. L, Mills (New Zealand) stated that he had discussed tile proposed all-British cable with Mr. Rhodes. The latter hoped shortly to confer with .the Australian Ministers on the subject, but would not commit himself till he had seen more of the development of wireless telegraphy. Mr. Mills added that New Zealanders and Australians would be one in reciprocity.
BALLARAT BAND CONTEST. Melbourne, October 28. After Rozelle had been declared the winner of the band championship, .the president announced late last night that a recount of points had placed the Geelong Municipal Band first with ISfi points and Rozelle second with 185. Rozelle won the quickstep competition. The adjudicator declared that though lie could not say that the performances in A grade were of as high a standard as the leading British bands, they were, nevertheless, good. TRANSCONTINENTAL LTNE. The Federal Government has concluded the contracts with English, American, and Australian companies respectively to supply a total of 40,000 tons of rails for the transcontinental railway.
