TARANAKI LAND

REFERENCES IN THE HOUSE.

By Telegraph—Own Correspondent. Wellington, Last Night.

The subject of land settlement in Taranaki figured to some extent in the discussion on the Land Bill at its third reading stage in the House to-night. Mr. Tsitt opened the question by stating that on a recent visit to that district he had been told by a relative of Mr. Okey, the member' for the district, that the farms were occupied not by the owners but by lessees of the owners, who were charged rack rents, and that money was as scarce as in the old days of barter and exchange, and later on in the debate Mr. Lanreiison stated that ten years a<*o the aver;:go size of the Taranaki holding was 232 acres, while to-day it was 250 acres.
