At the women's session of the Congregational Union, feminine dress was warmly criticised. One speaker declared women were devoted to pleasure and to look young was their chief desire. "We see," said the speaker, "many women at this gathering growing younger with the passing years." Another speaker asked why it was that the modern woman seems to find it easy to put off her modesty when fill-; puts on her clothes.
