The Government has accepted an amendment removing Trinity College, Dublin, and Queen's University, Belfast, from the control of the Irish Parliament. The Right Hon. A. Birrell thought the demand was unnecessary, but Mr. Redmond offered no objection. The Labor Party supported the Government in leaving the control of Labor legislation to the Irish Parliament. Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald said that the English factory legislation was disappointingly administered in Ireland. ENGLISH OR IRISH. Received 23, 9.50 p.m. London, October 23. The House of Commons, by 328 to 222,- rejected an amendment reserving to the British Parliament the power to maintain English as the sole language of the Irish Parliament and the Law Courts. An amendment was also lost preventing the Irish Parliament from disqualifying candidates for public positions on the ground that they did not know Gaelic. A clause was guillotined shutting out I<>l amendments on clauses I and 2. THE DISESTABLISHMENT QUESTION Mr. Birrell, debating the amendment withholding from the Irish Parliament the power to disestablish any religion, promised to introduce words to secure that the constitutions of religious bodies "would not be interfered with except'at the denomination's own desire. The amendment was withdrawn. A MANIFESTO. Sir A. Conan Doyle, Mr. Joseph Hocking, Mr. Pirie, Mr. Frederick Pollock and Mr. Westridge Way,, in a manifesto, state that they do not support Gladstone's Home Rule scheme, but are convinced that some form of Home Rule is necessary to remove a standing danger to the Empire. The present Bill is an honest endeavor, and should be passed.
