THE MINE FIRE.
THE DANGERS OF GAS. By Cable—Press Associatidn—Copyright.. Hobart, October 21. Official news states that since the extension of the fire at the 700 ft. level, the 830 ft. and 1000 ft. levels have become so filled with gas that it is impossible to work there without the greatest risk. The work of raising the bodies has therefore been delayed until fans are placed on the engine winze and the main shaft, to clear the workings of foul air and gas. These are now being put in place. The firemen and miners assisting them are unanimous that the levels are unfit to be entered now, even with helmets.
A Royal Commission will be appointed to enquire immediately into the cause of the fire. SUBSCRIPTION AT CAULFIELD. Melbourne, October 21. A collection in aid of the Lyell sufferers was made on the grandstand at the Caulfield faces on Saturday, and realised £l2O.
