The Daily NAws says that Dr. Clifford, the well-known Baptist preacher, is 'organising for 1913 a passive resistance campaign throughout the country on the education question. AN ABSCONDING BROKER. Brussels, October 18. Henri Wilmarts, the brother of 'Urt absconding broker, 'has been arrested on j a charge of complicity in his frauds. J Wilmarts is supposed to have embezzled : £2,500,000.

Mr. Asquith will undergo a slight operation at the week-end for the removal of a growth in his shoulder. FIRE AT BANBURY. London, October 18. A fire broke out in Samuelson's agricultural engineering works at Banbury, the damage being estimated at £OO,OOO. Two hundred people are out of work. HORSE-DOPING. Paris, October 18. As the result of Professor Kauffmann's examination of saliva, the Jockey Club have disqualified three horses for doping. They were unable to prove the responsibility of the trainers. THE PAPUAN RUBBER CASE. Sydney, October 10. In the Papuan rubber case, in which Joseph Cox and John George Altaian, directors of the Papuan Rubber and Trading Company, were charged with conspiracy to falsify the prospectus and 1 balance-sheet, defendants were committed for trial.
