WAITARA NEWS.

(From Our Own Corresp&ndent). "Oh, listen to the Band!" Wft would i? we conld, but it we can't, how can we? This is tk> position so far as the public are concerned. . Here we have in the town irt good set of hand instruments, a bandmaster ever ready and anxious ;to make the bund efficient, some '3O players, yet practices are attended by about five or six men as a .rule, and these few are getting vi'i-y sick and tired of the want of interest shown by the others. "The public are being continually asked to assist the band, and respond every time, but so far as getting a musical return for their assistance the result is nil. At the present time a numbs* of ladies have in hand tiic preliminary work of a bazaar, and, needless to say, they are a hard-working committee and will "make good." But what is the use of it all if bandsmen who have instruments never come to practice? They should do one of two things—either attend or hand in their instruments, so that an effort could be made to reorganise the institution by bringing in young lads to be taught. Good instruments are hanging up in baronial halls and .sheds as trophies, instead of fulfilling the object for which they were first made and afterwards purchased. It is to be sincerely hoped that an effort will be made to define .the position in regard to instruments held but not used by those who are supposed to be members. The final social of the Hibernian Committee "was held on Thursday evening, when an enjoyable evening was spent in 1 the Clifton Hall.

The bowling green was officially opened on Thursday. In a few appropriate rei marks .the president (Mr. H. E. Gilbert) referred to the attendance, and" line weather, trusting it was a good augury for the club's success. He then called on Miss Gilbert to throw the first jack, which was "well and truly laid," and declared the green opened. A match, President v. Vice-president, was- won by. the former's team. There were 30 players taking part. Afternoon tea was Provided by the ladies. '
