Before the Campaign Contributions Investigation Commission, Thomas W.. iLawson related a plot to nominate a iPresidential candidate satisfactory to Wall Street interests to defeat Roosevelt at the National Convention. They planned the nomination of President Taft, whom they thereafter supported. It was then proposed to urge Roosevelt to run as a third candidate. A million dollar fund was arranged in order to "deadlock the Democratic Convention, thus securing that the Democratic dark hor.se candidate, who would be elected President, should obey Wall Street.
