MOKAU JONES.
THE PARLIAMENTARY ENQUIRY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. At the Mokau land enquiry to-day the Under-Secretary of Native Affairs produced the original document signed by the Native Minister (Mr. Ballance) in 1885, authorising Joshua Jones to conclude his negotiations with the natives.
''This is not the document I meant," said Mr. Jones. "The document I spoke of yesterday is written on paper by, I think it was, T. W. Lewis, in handwriting. It was before this was printed, and he took me into Sir Robert Stout, and Sir Robert Stout signed the thing in my presence. This is not the document."
Mr. W. H. Bell: "Is that the copy of it?" U
Witness: "Yes. I don't doubt that that is Mr. Ballanee's signature."
Witness went on to argue that the Government was directly connected with the Mokau property,' and that it tad full power to set up an enquiry with the object of bringing about the settlement of the trouble. His complaint was that he had been refused the vight of action; that his case had never been fully before a court of competent jurisdiction. He alleged that he could prove that his title, had been slandered after the mortgage was given.
