MILITARY PENSIONS BILL.

local objections,

The Tavanaki veterans are up in arms against the objectionable proposals contained in the Military Pensions Bill, as witness the following telegram which was despatched by Mr. A. Standish to Mr. H. Okey, M.P.:—

"Veterans very disappointed at proposed Bill. Not one out of twenty will benefit by it. Had hoped to get pensions as rewards for valuable military services rendered in maintaining the Queen's supremacy, "to do which involved many dangers and hardships. Pensions should be, as all military pensions are, irrespective of what property or income a pensioner may have. The proposed Bill has objectionable pauper element about. Show this to Premier and Mr. Samuel.

In reply Mr. Okey wired as follows: "Hons. Kelly and Samuel, Messrs. Hine, Wilkinson and self waited on Premier re amendments suggested, which we all agree with. He has promised to bring it before Cabinet before the Bill goes into committee."

The local branch of the Veterans' Association will meet this afternoon in the Drill Hall to consider (he position.
