THE MID-LANARK SEAT. By Cable—Press London, October 7. The Scottish Miners' Federation has selected Mr. Smillie to contest the MidLanark seat at the next election.

TAXATION OF LAND. London, October 7. Mr. C. P. Trevelyan presided at a conference which, by a large majority, carried a resolution 'in favor of 'taxation on land on a proper basis of rating, instead of on industries.

THE INSURANCE ACT. Received 8, 10.20 p.m. London, October 8. The newspapers state that the Cabinet has agreed to grant a further million for medical benefits insurance, giving the' doctors 7s 6d per patient.

THE LAND CONFERENCE. NO SINGLE TAX. Received 8, 11.55 p.m. London, October 8. At the land conference Mr. Outhwaite claimed that Mr. Asquith limited the political power of the aristocracy, and was going to limit their economic power. The speech met with a mixed reception. Mr. Arnold Lupton appealed to the conference not to commit themselves to a policy which would wreck the Liberals. (Cries of "We will risk it.") Mr. Lloyd-George will speak at Swindon on October 20 in response to a memorial from ten thousand agricultural laborers.

Mr. Lambert, speaking at Chawleigh, Devon, ridiculed the single tax. He stated that Mr. Lloyd George had authorised him to say that there was not the remotest possibility of his becoming a single-taxer. Moreover, he did not believe that he could regenerate agriculture by taxing it. He had entered the land enquiry with a view to lessening the burdens upon progressive cultivators.

THE HOME RULE COMMITTEE. London, October 8. Mr. Asquith, on Thursday, will propose that twenty-five days be allotted to the committee on Home Rule, five days to report, and two days for .the third reading, the chairman to have power to select amendments. Stringent precautions will be taken against opposition and disputatory motions. The Government expects the session to end on February 28.
