The Rev. B. L. Thomas, of Nelson* has accepted the position of minister to ■the Masterton Congregational Church, rendered, vacant by the resignation oj the Kev. T. G. Butler. At tlio unanimous request of Uie dn rectors of the Standard Insurance Com* pany, 11 r. George Fenwick has consented to fill the vacancy on the board caused by the death of Mi'. John Reid. Mr. John Ross, who lias already given substantial monetary assistance to Knox College, Dunedin, has undertaken to defray the cost of erecting a college chapel. This represents a donation of some £2OOO. Mr. A. Morton was , yesterday reelected chairman of directors- of the Mangorei Daily Company for the eighteenth year in succession. Mr. Morton has .held that position ever ejnce the Company was formed. At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki County Council Mr. J. Brown was-re-elected chairman for the balance of the ensuing term. ■Returning thanks for his election, Mr. Brown .-mid that lie thought it was now recognised, that the Councillors worked for the benefit of the County as a whole. Writing to a friend in New Plymouth, the Rev. H. 0. Hanby, who is in the Hamilton Hospital, says the operation of amputating his leg was quite successful, and that he was wheeled out on the verandah last week for a short time. His sister, who suffered from shock, is now able to get about, and his wife has practically recovered.

The New Plymouth Laborers' Union last might passed the following motion: —"That the best thanks of the Union be conveyed to Mr. H. Willis of the local Department of Labor, for his courteous, and patient attention to all matter* pertaining to the welfare of our Union,, and wishes him all success in his new field of labor at Ohristchurch."

Rear-Admiral Ross, of the retired list of the- United .States Navy, reached Auckland on Wednesday by the Tofua, accompanied by his daughter. The Admiral, who is much interested in social and political questions, means to spend two months in the North Island and the same in the South Island, studying working conditions and other questions. On Saturday evening, the executive of the Operative Tailors' and Tailoresses'' Union of Taranaki made a presentation to Mr. Willis as a mark of their appreciation of the commonsensc, tact and energy-displayed, by ihim during the tim« he has filled the position of Inspector of Factories and Awards for the Taranaki district. In making the presentation the president spoke of the,kindly assistance and adVice Mr. Willis had always- been ready to give to the workers. Last evening the staff of the Royal Pictures met the retiring manager (Mr. Crust) and presented him with a leather travelling bag, suitably inscribed. At the commencement of last night's benefit concert Mr. Crust was accorded an oration, Mr. Crust acknowledging the compliment on the screen. He leaves to-day for Dunedin en route to Sydney, where he has received a responsible appointment, and carries with him the best wishes of the many friends he has made in New Plymouth.

At' yesterday's meeting of the suppliers of the Mangorei Dairy Company feeling reference was made to the late Mr. Alfred Marsh'. The Chairman referred to the active part that the Late Mr. Marsh had taken in the formation of the Company seventeen years ago, when his thorough and practical knowledge of machinery had proved invaluable. As a director, too, for over ten years he had conserved the interests of the Company. A vote of sympathy with the relative* was passed,' all silently standing. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. S. Shaw in the death of their youngest son, Hugh Wakefield, which occurred yesterday evening. The deceased who was only seventeen years old, was a very bright boy, popular with his fellows, «nd quite a brilliant scholar. He was educated at Nelsou College, where his Jiealth failed him, causing him to cut short a promising scholastic career. He returned to his parents' home at New Plymouth, and for a short time attended the local High School. His illness, however, grew from bad to worse, and his untimely end was not unexpected. He v was a boy beloved by both his masters and his school mates, and before hi* illness was an enthusiastic footballer. The interment will be private. Mr. John Douglas Hodson, who died at New Plymouth recently, wns bora in Cumberland, England, in 1841. He saw 20 years' service as an engineer in the liners of different companies trading to the Mediterranean and China Seas. He also ran between Liverpool and theAmerican coasts. He went through the Abyssinian campaign, and was one of the survivors of the White Star liner Atlantic, on which he was third engineer. He came out to the colonies in 1882 to serve in the Australian inter- , State trade, and la years ago took up his residence in New Zealand, being for some time in the employ of the Union Company. Finally he settled in New Plymouth to take charge of the pumping station at the water works. Failing health, howeveT, compelled him to relinquish the position. . .He is survived by a wife and. four children—two sons and two daughters, the eldest being 19 years old.
