ARBITRATION COURT.

CARPENTERS AND LABORERS' DISPUTE. The Arbitration Court has delivered its reserved decision with regard to the points which were submitted for its jurisdiction at New Plymouth this week, in connection with the Carpenters and Joiners and the General Laborers' disputes. In the case of each award the only ma* terial points not settled by the Conciliation Council were those relating to wages and preference. The award of the Court on the points mentioned is as follows: — CARPENTERS AND JOINERS. The minimum rate of wages for journeymen carpenters and joiners shall be Is 4 ] /i>d an hour. Preference—lf any employer shall hereafter engage any worker who shall not be a member of the union, and who within one week after his engagement shall not become and remain a member of the union, the employer shall dismiss such worker from his service, if requested to do so by the union, provided there is then a member of the union equally qualified to perform the particular work required to be done, and ready and willing to undertake the same; when an employer shall employ any worker who is not a member of the union, he shall within twenty-four hours thereafter give notice in writing of such employment to the secretary of the union. The provisions of the foregoing clause shall operate only if and so long as the rules of the union shall permit any journeyman carpenter and joiner of good character and sober habits to become a member of the union upon payment of an entrance fee not exceeding ss, and upon a written or verbal application, without ballot or other election, and to continue a member upon payment of subsequent subscriptions not exceeding fid per week

LABORERS,

Wages—Laborers employed in connection with the erection, alteration or demolition of any building or in excavating or preparing ground for the same, stall be paid not less than Is iy 2 d per hour for the time employed on such work. Tunnel men and timber men 10s .per shift, all other workers engaged underground 9s per shift. Quarry work: Workers engaged in getting out stone roughlv squared t'o measurement, Is 3d per hour; powdermen, hammer and drill men and jumper men, Is iy 2 d_per hour. All other workers engaged in quarry work Is l%d per hour. General work: Laborers employed in concrete work., pick and shovel work, sewer work, kcrbing and channelling work, laying and cleaning drains and asphalt and tar work, Is iy»d per hour. Preference.—lf any employer shall hereafter engnge any worker, who shall not be a member of the union, and who, within one week after his engagement shall not become and remain a member of the union, the employer shall dismiss such worker from his service if requested to do so by the union, provided there is then a member of the union able to perform the work and willing to undertake the same. The provision re membership of union is the same as in the joiners' award.
