UNDESIRABLE IMMIGRANTS.

THE WHITE PERIL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Melbourne, October 4. Two consumptive immigrants applied to Mr. Hagelthorn, Victorian Minister without portfolio, for light rural employment. They admitted that they emigrated in the hope of the restoration of their health. Mr. Hagelthorn declares that the system of checking assisted immigrants is unsatisfactory. He proposes that medical officers be appointed at important centres, and that assisted emigrants be required to produce certificates from one of these. Mr. Tudor announced in the Federal House that negotiations were proceeding between the Federal and State Governments for entrusting the examination to the Commonwealth and preventing afflicted persons emigrating to Australia.
