COLONIAL MUTUAL LIFE.
A REPLY TO ALLEGATIONS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, October 2. A petition from the Colonial Mutual Life Society, presented to the Assembly, states that four out of five of the signatories to the petition asking for an investigation were formerly employed by the society. The petition alleges that one was dismissed for misconduct and the other three were dispensed with for good and sufficient reasons. The petition urged that none of the allegations were supported by evidence other than the statements contained in the petition of the five itself. The statements against the society, its conduct, financing and management, are denied and described as | false and misleading. - The petitioner! believe that the previous petition was presented with the intention of injuring the society and damaging its interests, and not bona fide in the public interest or in the interests of the society. The Assembly decided to print and circulate the petition, which is of great length. The debate on the second reading of the Colonial Mutual Life Bill was adjourned, after a motion that the Bill be read six months hence had been defeated by 20 votes to 18.
