WORK AND WAGES.
LAKE COLERIDGE STRIKE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Chistchurch, Tuesday, -i Reports from Lake Coleridge state that attempts at a settlement of the strike proved abortive. McWilliams, the contractor, has agreed to the reinstate- , ment of the engine-driver Rankin, and\ also to provide bath rooms and change . rooms immediately, and place ladders \
in the shafts, to reinstate all striken, to pay time and a half for overtime and double time for Sundays, and to recognise the Laborers' Union.- ' ' ' *
The strikers demanded the dismissal of two carpenters who had been working during the strike. McWilliams declined, on the ground that thees men were working under an arbitration award and that he had no right to dismiss them. •' The strikers thereupon declined to resume work. It is understood that the carpenters applied to their union for directions on the .commencement of the strike, and were told to continue at work.
