TELEGRAMS.

RAILWAY RETRENCHMENT.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The announcement that work on the Napier end of the East Coast railway is to cease temporarily is not by any means received favorably here. The subject was mentioned at a special meeting of the Chamber of Comn.ercc to-day, when members of the East Coast Railway League were also present. After some discussion a telegram was forwarded to the Minister, expressing regret at the proposed cessation of work, and trusting that it may only be temporary} further, that the district generally is greatly perturbed, and it would cause a feeling of relief if the Minister could wire his reasons for the temporary stoppage.
