The dispute between the Borough Engineer and tho Council over drainage and other matters, which has been proceeding for some time, reached finality last evening. The engineer (W. J. O'Donnell) submitted a report in which iic contended that he was not wholly to blame. He considered that he was .relieved of responsibility for defective work in the sewerage extension by the action of the Council appointing a ganger, whom he contended had full charge of the work. The Council decided to dispense with the services <if the 'engineer and to give him two months' salary, on condition that he brought the work in hand up-to-date before leaving. | REBUFF TO ANTI-MILITARISM. ' Eltham, Saturday. _ In reply to the circular from the Na- | tional Peace Council, Christchurch, the ■ Eltham Borough Council last night unanimously passed the following resolution: —"This Council lias no sympathy j with those who desire, through technical defects in the law and in thin• administration of the same, to evade their duty in the defence of their country." Hanau's cargo is being got out as rapidly as possible, and is not expected to be damaged. I A MAYOR WELCOMED. ' ! Pahiatua, Saturday, j A welcome home was extended to'the Mayor of Pahiatua, Mr. W. W. McCardale, by the citizens last night, upon Ihe occasion of his return frofri Australia, after having undergone, a successful operation._ The welcome took the form of a social. The Mayor was presented with an illuminated'address and Mrs. McCardale with a handsome silver tea service and purse of sovereigns. Mr. McCardale has been identified with the Borough affairs. for the past 20 years, having served seventeen years as a Councillor and three years as' Mayor.
