Stratford News
r'rOMi our resilient reporter. - STRAY PARAGRAPHS. The Borough Council's steam road--1 roller has arrived. Thorn has not been ail empty shop in ■ Broadway for many months. Some other Taranaki towns have a different ! tale to tell. A traveller by Saturday afternoon's train, not a Stratford man, voiced the opinion that Strut frml* is going to. have by far the best dairy show in the North Island. The assurance is hereby given that that is our intention, anyhow. Whaiigamomona friends will regret to hear that Mr. Hubert Campbell is still in indifferent health. .Major Young. Oovernment Veterinarian, was in Stratford on Friday and Saturday, with a view of reporting to the Agricultural Department upon the complaint forwarded by the Borough Conn- j Icil that the loading of diseased cattle at the railway yards in the borough is likely to be dangerous to the, school chil- I Idren, owing to the proximity of the yards to the school. "Sinbad the Sailor" took Broadway by storm on Saturday afternoon. There was one funny incident. A cabm'an approached a party of the theatricals as - they arrived by the train, and was engaged to collect some impedimenta and convey the owners thereof to the County Motel. The commission was duly exej cnted. Perhaps the readers will be able I to imagine the disgust-of the actors and : actresses when Ihey discovered that the j County Hotel was less than a minute's 5 walk away. Dr. and Mrs. Menzies and family have left for the north. Dr. Menzies has been compelled, by ill-health, to seek a change of climate. At the Stratford Club on Friday he was presented by the members with a souvenir, and the president expressed the regret of the club at his departure. Mrs. Menzies was made the gift the other day of a gold bangle as the parting gift of a number of lady friends. The A. & P. Executive baulked at [ the bad weather on Friday night, but ! met on Saturday. I Houses are still unobtainable, or nearly so. Knits will soon reach the | unattainable. ; The donations to the A. & P. prize list still continue to roll in. So do the the members' subscriptions. The more the merrier. A reminder is given of the debate tomorrow night at the Egmont Club on Mr. McMp.hon's Bill to establish a Biological Department, with a highly qualified stall'. Such a department would be able, and is intended, to give any farmer expert advice as to the constituents of his soil, its possibilities, and proper treatment. BERNARD'S PICTURES. Picture patrons, who nightly express their complete satisfaction with the excellence of the productions at His Majesty's T.heatre, will muster in force tonight, when the management are eclipsing all their previous great successes with a new selection of biographic wonders of unprecedented magnitude. Heading the startling array is another of the Kalem players' heart-throbbing Irish dramas adapted from the well-known poem of Tom Moore, "You Remember Ellen." Photographed in the Emerald 'lsle, the Irish hills and dales, with more intimate views of roadside, croft and meadow, give perfect setting to 'this poetic Irish story of Ellen, "pride of the village," of whom Tom Moore wrote. Miss Gene (Jauntier takps the leading role, and her charming ways as an Irish colleen are well known to frequenters of 'ligh-class picture houses, and as Ellen •he excels all her previous efforts. It is a thoroughly delightful feature picture, that can be shown to infant as well as ■ adult, and, like all Irish pictures previously featured at Bernard's, is beautifully photographed. The other films ranked as features are" the "Assigned Servant," great Australian convict drama; "Home Folk," A.B. masterpiece; "Lignite Mine in Bnix," "Life of Bees," and a host of scenic and comic gems.
