NOTES ON THE RACING. (By "Moturoa.") Wanganui, Last Nighi. The weather cleared up and the track, was in good order for the opening of th« Wanganui spring meeting. The racing was* very interesting, though the favorites had a bad time. The Taranaki horses, Piriwai, Patronale, Darby Paul, Sandy Paul, Timothy and Con the Shaughraun, ran prominently. The disqualification of Darby Pad caused great dissatisfaction, besides rofcbing Taranaki supporters of a goodAeap of money. The interference was plrrely unintentional, and could not have affected the result. Jockey Tim Jones was disqualified for twelve months. Prosper,'Altcar and Ngatiruanui were the best backed in the Flying Handicap. Ngatiruanui was left at the post, the first to move being Piriwai. Prosper took command after two furlongs, and! led Piriwai and Altcar into the straight. Prosper died away here, leaving Piriwai and Altcar to fight out a great finish, the Taranaki mare winning by a head. .• Merry Frank finished fast, a close third, followed by Prosper and Equitas. ; *■• Backers rushed Oxenhope for the Maiden Hack. Others well supported were Kew and Patronale. Kew led Topic and Oxenhope to the turn. Oxenhope got in front below the distance, but the New Plymouth filly, Patronale,' »-■•* came with a rattle and won very easily. Topic was a good third: then came Vieux and Princess Flo. „
The Wanganui Guineas saw Clifford's bracketed pair slightly more fancied than, , Bon Reve. The latter was fractious at the post, kicking Brown Owl aiid' Oakum ■ and repeatedly breaking the tapes, and the rider, W. Young, was subsequently t suspended for the rest of the meeting. From a splendid start, Haskyne led . Brown Owl, Our King and Bon Reve to . the turn, Our King being quickly beaten. ' Brown Owl looked a winner at the distance, but Bon Reve finished stronger, and 'easily outclassed the filly. Haskyne was a fair third, then came Multiply and Vocation.
The only withdrawals from the Okehu Hurdles were Koran and S.trathmorra. The public made Bollin a hot favorite Coronetted, Seaman and Sandy Paul being next best backed of an even lot. Hawick was responsible for the pace, but Coronetted took the lead at the horn* turn, and was immediately passed by Bollin. Darby Paul made tip a hean of ground from the four furlongs post. Joining Bollin at the last jump, Darby Paul swerved away from the whip, bumping Bollin, and won by two lengths. Sandy Paul finished fast in third place. After long consideration, Darby Paul was disqualified. • Fashion Plate wais a strong order for the Hack Hurdles, and but for jumping on prostrate horses must have won. Avi-. atri.v led for .a short distance, and then Timothy went to the front. Five furlongs from home, Te Roti and St. Feli* ■fell, Silver CTuse being left in front. Fashion Plate made up lost ground gamely, but suffered defeat by a head. Te Roti broke a leg and was destroyed.
Postillion and Aratiatia carried most > coin in the Putiki Hack. The start was a straggling one, St. Helena getting away; . first and Postillion badly. Aratiatia , quickly cut down St. Helena and led to * the turn, where lie carried his opponent right out wide and won by a neck. Al- ; luar was a fair third, and Semaphore fourth, with Tostillion next. A protest for jostling against the winner was dismissed.
Kilrain, Ngatimaru and Aloha were entrusted with the wealth in the Spring Handicap. Con the' Shaughraun and Obligant led from a poor start. The favorites all losing ground, Obligant made every post a winning one, and scored easily from Con the Shaughraun, Ladrone and Xgatimavn.
