OBITUARY.
MR. W. 11. SCOTT.
Death has removed from our midst another of Taianaki's fast-disappearing band of ciirlv pioneers in the person of Mr. Walter Henry Scott; of Courtenay street. He died in the Hospital yesterday morning, after a comparatively short illnew. A Londoner by birth, Mr. Seott was born 84 years ago. He learnt the building trade, and in 1854 came to New Plymouth by the barque "Cashmere." It was his original intention to take up land, but the troublesome times in Taranaki of those days resulted in him going into business as a builder. Incidentally, many of New Plymouth's oldest buildings' were erected by Mr. Seott, who, when the native trouble* broke out enlisted in the militia under Captain Win. King. He went''through the whole war. and'besides other engagements took part in the battle of Mahoetahi. For his services Mr.. Scott was awarded a New Zealand War medal. The deceased gentleman at one time took a very live interest in municipal politics being the prime mover in the agitation which resulted in New Plymoutn being made a borough. He was elected to the now defunct Town Board in 18<w, and in all saw some 13 years' service on that body, and as a Borough Councillor. He has also sat on the Harbor Board, 14cens- | ing Committee, School Committee, and other local institutions. He has .been living in retirement for a number of years past. Of a kindly and cheery disposition the deceased was esteemed and respected as one of our best and most useful citizens by a large circle of friends. Mrs. Seott pre-deceased her husband 20 years ago. Mr.' Scott is survived Uy three sons and three daughter*. Being a war veteran, Mr. Seott will be accorded a military funeral, which will leave his late residence, Courtenay street, at 2 p.m. to-day.
MRS. SARAH MeCARTHY. On Wednesday there passed away at Inglewood, Mrs. Sarah McCarthy, relict of the late Mr. T. McCarthy, at the age of 72 years. Death' was due ttf heart failure.' Mrs. McCarthy was a native of Cork, Ireland, and had no relatives in the Dominion. , Thirty-five years of her lifo were spent in India and China with her husband's regiment, the 18th Royal Irish, and 35 years in Inglewood. She herself',was the daughter of a soldier.
MR. SMITH SULLIVAN. Mr. Smith Sullivan, an old resident of Hawera, but lately residing in New flymouth, died yesterday with tragic suddeness., He had just returned to his home in Queen' street from a shopping expedition, when he suddenly collapsed. He expired beiore the arrival of a medical practitioner, who was quickly on the scene. Death was found,to be from heart failure, for which, he had been treated' while resident in Hawera. Aninquest will not be held. The late Mr. Sullivan, who is survived by a wife and a grown-up family, was born. in Lancashire, and had been a resident in New Zealand for more than half a century. He was on the railway construction work in the Crimean" War, and saw much of the fighting that took place there.
AN OLD IIAWERA PIONEER. Mrs. William Douglas, an old pioneer of the district, died at Hawera on Wednesday, aged 85 years. The deceased had been a resident of Hawera for about forty years, and saw some of the vicissitudes of the Maori War. She leaves a grown-up family, including Mrs. Malcolm Campbell, Mrs! -T. Cooper (of Ketemarea). and Messrs. H. and W. Douglas, of Hawera. Her husband died a number of years ago.—Star. . . :
