A Sydney cablegram states that John Roberts, the biliard player, is seriously ill, from heart trouble.
Sir Geo. Clifford will arrive by the express from the South to-night, in connection with petroleum matters. Miss Meston, sole teacher at' Lincoln School,, has been granted two months' leave of absence by ,the Education Board in order to visit Australia.
At yesterday's meeting of the Education Board, Mr. 'W. B. Smith was appointed to the Raupuha School, and Mr. liara-h head-teacher of the Kaimiro School.-.
. The resignations were accepted at yesterday's meeting of the Education Board of Miss K. Cooper, assistant at' Uremii, mid Miss D. Xally, sole teacher at Manga ehu. • The annual meeting .of the «New Zealand Institute i,f held at Wellington on .Monday, appointed. Mr. A. T. 'Moore, of the 'Taranaki Herald' stall', one of the two vice-presidents for the ensuing year. At a largely attended social at Opunake on Monday evening. Mr A. Cray, who lias been headmaster of the Opuiiake school for the past seven years, but who k resigning to take up the position of Technical organiser to the Taranaki Education Board, was presented by Mr Lnoney on behalf of the Opnnake public with a gold albert. Mrs Cray was also presented with a silver-mounted oak tray. From {he senior cadets, Mr Gray was the recipient of a tobacco pouch and silver match box.
Dean Lighthcart celebrated the silver jubilee of bis ordination yesterday at llotorun, when a huge number of clergy from all parts of the Diocese, including Bishop Cleary, were present. The Dean was presented with three purses of sovereigns from (he pakeha parishioners, and two from the .Maori Catholics, yesterdayj besides minor presentations. After Pontifical High .Mass the clergy of (he Diocese presented 'him with a substantial cheque, and the Fathers of the Maori Mission also presented a cheque for purchasing, a buggy. Dean. Lighthead, has, in nineteen years, with a brief break, been connected with Rotorua, and takes a keen interest in the Maori people. Several presentations were made at last night's social gathering held under
the auspices of the A Company of local Territorials. Lieutenant AYillis, who is leaving' shortly for Christclmrch, was made the recipient of a pair of binoculars. In making the presentation, baptain Fletcher referred to -Mr. Willis' popularity with all ranks, and to the valuable services he had rendered to the corps in the. matter of rifle-shooting instruction, lie was the crack shot of the Company, and was always to be found, teaching 'the young idea how to shoot. fie had captained the Rifles' team which went to Auckland and captured that coveted shooting trophy, the "Waihi Rooster." Again, he had led (lie Company's team when it won the Tiseh Challenge Shield against all Talanaki. Mr. Willis had also captained a team at a championship meeting 1 at Wanuanui. Cndoi'btcdly he would be a distinct lo=s to t ! he local Territorials. Captain Fletcher also presented Sergeant Crutch with an officers' sword, and Sergeant Southam with a travelling bag. JJnth officers are severing their connection with tiie A Company on account of promotion. A presentation is also to be made to Colour-Sergeant Clarke, who was absent that evening. lie has likewise been promoted to a commission in the Senior Cadets.
