A SYDNEY FIRE.
A TIERCE BLAZE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney. September 24. Groths. who were fully injured, had groat stores of oil and other inflammable material. The lire was one of the fiercest ever seen in the city. During its height the retreat of a number of firemen on the roof was cut off. and a change of wind forced them to a corner where there was a sh r er drop of fifty feet. The position was critical. but another veer of th" wind enabled them to reach the ladders and escape. abandoning the hose. The crowds were so dense that several persons were slightly injured in the trn-h. A HAPPY INSPIRATION'. Sydney. September 24. An employee at the Empress Theatre had a happy inspiration, and announced when the fire started that the people next door were burning a few shaving-. and if the audiance wanted to do so they could go and see. The theatre was thus cleared without mishap.
