A DISASTROUS FIRE. Brisbane, September 23. A fire at Messrs Groth and Company's oil and paint manufacturing premises in Georgo street to-night, scorched the roof of the Empress Picture Theatre, next door. Groths' three storey building was gutted. The damage is estimated at £40,000. INSUFFICIENT FREE-BOARD. Received 24, 12.20 a.m. London, September 23. The Board of Trade attributes the wreck of the North Briton to insufficient free board, and recommends an enquiry with a view to a revision of the rules, which were altered in 1900.

Paris, September 23. Two excursion trains came into collision at Caen. Eight passengers were killed and twenty injured.
